a funeral
This past weekend my Uncle Jimmy passed away at the age of 74. Â Technically he was my great uncle (my grandpa Johnson’s brother), but it made no difference to us, he was family. Â Uncle Jimmy never had any kids of his own, but he looked at my dad as one of his own. Today was his funeral and it was great to hear stories of him as a kid, in college and in the Air Force. Â Before I was even born, Uncle Jimmy went in the hospital to get a simple procedure, but during the process he was overanesthetized and was technically dead for 6 minutes. Â He was not supposed to live a long after that, but almost 40 years had gone by before he passed last Sunday. Â Since the accident, Uncle Jimmy was still as smart as ever and looked the same, but he talked very slow. Â He spent the next years living with my grandparents while he was in rehabilitation. Â My dad was in college then, but when he came home they would share a room. I have really great and fun memories of him as a little girl. Â I would always know it was him on the phone when he called because there would be a long pause…..hellloooo…….this…is…youurrr…Uncle…Jim. Â He would always call and just chat with dad. Â Also, uncle Jimmy went to California a lot when I was little and he knew that I LOVED apricots, so he would always bring me back fresh california apricots! Â In fact, after his funeral today, Aaron and I stopped at Costco and they had apricots as one of the samples…it was definitely a sign to me and it put a smile on my face. He was buried at Willamette National Cemetery, after the flag was folded and shots were fired, they presented my aunt Fran (uncle Jimmy’s wife) with it. Â In her tears, she looked at my dad and said that she wanted my dad to have it ‘because Jimmy loved you so much.’ Â I don’t think my dad could have felt more honored.
