By challenging your team enough in practice, it will pass the test when the big opportunity comes and it matters most.
Recently, Cleveland County had an important example of preparation paying off.В Clearwater Paper announced a project that will place nearly 260 million taxable dollars within the community, along with plans to employ 250 skilled workers. This was a great example of preparation meeting opportunity. It’s a reminder that communities need to make investments in order to win “the big game.”В
Cleveland County expended time, resources and effort long before the team from Clearwater considered the Cleveland County Business Park West in Shelby for its expansion. Duke Energy, a very key ally in economic development efforts throughout the region, was part of that investment. Duke’s Site Readiness Program, which the utility company conducts with McCallum Sweeney Consulting in Greenville, S.C., had helped the community evaluate and prepare the site – and the community – for just such a project. Duke’s program helps communities identify and set aside parcels of land for economic development, assess the strengths and weaknesses of those parcels (and the communities), and provide a plan of action to mitigate any weaknesses. Cleveland County used Duke’s program to secure the property, zone it and make sure the infrastructure was in place for industrial investment.В
Duke’s Site Readiness Program, which was recently named one of the Top 10 Superior Site Certification Programs in the U.S., has evaluated and improved 75 industrial sites and a number of potential megasites across the Carolinas since 2005. The program identifies, assesses, improves and increases awareness of industrial sites in the Duke Energy region. To qualify for the program, a site can be for either one large industrial facility or a potential multi-tenant site (industrial park). However, it must be a legitimate industrial site (usually 75 acres or more), and Duke must be able to compete for service to the site. For each site the studies validate as viable for a large industry, Duke Energy will provide a matching grant for implementing improvements that the studies recommend.
