Gluten-free Adventures in Sarasota, FL – Part 3

Whenever we are planning a trip, I spend time researching where we’re going regarding gluten-free options in the area. The only exceptions would be if we have to go to a funeral, which can not be pre-planned for. Otherwise, I know long before we start packing where I can eat and what I can order when I get there. Before I was diagnosed with celiac disease, we planned trips around great dining options and now we go where there are great gluten-free options available. Therefore, there really is no extra planning than what I’ve always done. The main difference is that I now have to pack safe gluten-free snacks or even a meal if we’re flying to our destination.

After deciding where to go on vacation, figuring out where exactly to stay while there is my next major decision. We’ve stayed in some pretty swanky places in the past. Many times we’ve been thrilled with our accommodations and other times we’ve been fairly disappointed. These days, we’re on much more of a budget than in years past so I focus on finding a clean place to stay with a full kitchen (if we’re going to be there more than a few days). Certainly, there are several large places right on the sand in the area and most have kitchens. However, at many such places you have to rent directly from the condo owners and pay a hefty cleaning fee for what could turn out to be a filthy place. Being burned when doing this more than once put us off doing it again. В Siesta Key, where we were looking to stay, is home to the famous Crescent Beach that is often featured on the Travel Channel. Many hotels at the beach don’t actually offer an ocean view which was something that took a moment to get used to.
